ABSOLUT Fringe: Eternal Rising of the Sun

I still have the notes scribbled into the same notebook from last year when I went to see HotForTheatre’s I ♥ Alice ♥ I. Reading lines from it brought back the warm and smiley feelings of a year ago, sitting in the New Theatre watching it. It was a winner at the ABSOLUT Fringe Festival awards last year too and deservedly so. I was totally blown away by I ♥ Alice ♥ I and was looking forward expectantly to Eternal Rising of the Sun.

To err is human, to dance divine.

Meet Gina, she’s hopeless, everyone knows. She wants to be in a hot air balloon with Michael Jackson. She wants to cry during her Oscar speech. She wants to hit that high note that makes people gasp. She wants to soar…to fly… to move. But Gina is hopeless, so she can’t.

This is the dark, moving and tender journey of Gina’s transformation. A poignant account of redemption and release. On the heels of multi award winning I ♥ Alice ♥ I, HotForTheatre brings you a compelling story of salvation, deliverance and barrel jumps.”

“Dark, moving and tender” captures Eternal Rising of the Sun exactly. It is powerful. It is funny. It is emotional and heart-wrenching. You can’t help but love Gina Divine, though if you met her in real life you might cross the street to avoid her. The more we see and hear of Gina, her past, her present and her love of dance, we laugh along with her and feel the hits. Who hasn’t dreamed of leaving it all behind and starting anew? We probably haven’t all dreamed that Michael Jackson would be our shining knight but Gina’s constant wishes and prayers to Michael Jackson to get her out of her life are truly endearing. The terror at and refusal to let herself go is something most of us can relate to in at least one aspect of life.

Amy Conroy is without a doubt a truly talented actor. She brought the audience single handedly on an emotional journey, to use a worn out phrase, and they never left her. Her acting is superb and I can’t wait to see what she and HotForTheatre do next.

Watch out for: Dancing in ‘The Temple’
