B for Baby – Carmel Winters
B FOR BABY is currently showing on the Peacock stage at the Abbey Theatre. Winner of The Irish Times Best New Play award in 2010, B FOR BABY took Dublin by storm before it took off on a 14 venue tour around Ireland (which unusually also included starting at the Tampere Theatre Festival in Finland).
Everyone dreams of something in their life. B wants a real hairdressers’ scissors and a wife. D wants a Winter Wonderland snow globe and ‘a big head of dirty auld curls’. Mrs C, she wants a baby and will do anything to have one. And if they can all help each other to be happy, what’s the harm in that?
Louis Lovett (B and Brian) and Michele Moran (D and Mrs C) both star in B FOR BABY and showcase their magnificent acting talents by playing challenging multiple roles. In this controversial tale, Lovett plays both B and Brian and Moran plays D and Mrs C. Having seen B FOR BABY last year, the change from one character to another from the actors can be a little jarring on the audience…the characters they each play are very different from each other. Each character is so believable that it is hard to go from believing in Lovett as the innocent, sweet, loving B and then a very short time later to the much more worldly and hard Brian but you do and that is the talent of both Mr. Lovett and Miss Moran.
Described by the Telegraph as a “wonderful bundle of perturbing laughs” and in the Evening Herald they said “B FOR BABY will break your heart and then put it back together again” - and it certainly will.
I’d definitely recommend that you take your chance to see B FOR BABY this week in it’s last venue of the tour. I know I’ll be heading in before the end of the week to see it (thank you to David in the Abbey for the ticket). It is playing in the Abbey Theatre until 19th November (this Saturday) at 8pm nightly with a matinee on Saturday 19th November, tickets cost from €13 (matinee) to €25 and you can buy them online at www.abbeytheatre.ie or by calling the box office on 01 87 87 222.
