yay of the day: baby red pandas at Dublin Zoo

Red panda

When I heard a few weeks ago new babies had arrived at Dublin Zoo I was excited. When I heard 2 of them were red pandas I actually jumped up and down for joy.

Anyone who knows me knows I adore red pandas or as they are sometimes known ‘firefoxes’. There are thought to be less than 10,000 of these beautiful creatures left in the world mainly due to loss of their natural habitat and poaching.

The first visit to the enclosure wasn’t fruitful but I did get to see mum and dad having some lunch and some afternoon kip, which proved very entertaining – these guys know how to chill!

I wasn’t the only one hoping to see the little ones. On my second visit I got talking to a family who had been at the enclosure for over 5 hours and only caught sight of one baby panda head peeking out of the den!

Just before closing time, I decided to give it one last shot and headed back to the enclosure. Thank my lucky stars, a few minutes later one of the critters decided to come out and have a quick look around. They move so quickly I couldn’t get a perfect shot but it was still great to see the little guy – they’re just too cute!

It was a fabulous afternoon between the weather and the buzz around the zoo which only this week opened up another new section, the Gorilla Rainforest. I can’t wait to see how they get on in their new home especially the new baby girl who was born there in September.

Here’s a few more snaps of the pandas other lovely critters that were enjoying the sun. What a super day – can’t beat the zoo!
