Filmbase is 25! They have some great events this weekend to celebrate including a ’Road to the Oscars’ event with filmmakers Juanita Wilson (The Door), Steph Green (New Boy) and Nicky Phelan (Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty) on Friday and a public interview with Saoirse Ronan on Saturday. Would you like to go?

I’m a member of Filmbase, despite not being a filmmaker. A brilliant resource in the heart of Temple Bar, it’s a cultural hub where I’ve attended many brilliant events and met some great people. There’s a brilliant café upstairs too!
They turn 25 this weekend and have a lot of events to celebrate. Thanks to Clare in Filmbase, we have tickets to give away to two of them:
Road to the Oscars Event – Friday 24th June
6.30 – 9pm, Basement Space, FilmbaseFilmbase 25 celebrations kick off on Friday 24th June with a special ‘Road to the Oscars’ panel session. Filmmakers Juanita Wilson (The Door), Steph Green (New Boy) and Nicky Phelan (Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty) are all appearing on the night to talk about their experiences of being nominated for an Oscar®. The event will include a screening of their nominated short films.

Saturday 25th June -Public Interview with Saoirse Ronan
3pm, Saturday 25, Basement SpaceOne of the highlights of the day will be a public interview with our special guest Saoirse Ronan to talk about movies, acting and her career so far.
Saoirse is one of Ireland’s great acting talents and already has an Oscar nomination under her belt along with a string of roles in internationally successful films. Interviewing her on the day will be filmmaker and actor Hugh O’Conor.

‘Get Into Film‘ is the theme of the day on Saturday 25th of June. Pop by to catch short films in the gallery space, there will be filmmaker talks in the café, we’ll have a tips and tricks demo for the Canon DSLR camera, an animation demo, a chance to meet staff members, a film reviewing workshop with Film Ireland and a stunt action workshop!
Stunt Action Class for Film & TV -11am Saturday, Basement Space, Free event
This session will be a casual but informative case study approach into the workings of the Stunt Industry i.e. being a Stunt performer/Co-Ordinator, pros and cons of film stunt action scenes. What works and doesn’t in choreographed fight displays, body burns, horse and vehicle skills. Also up for discuss will be action in, on and underwater and Firearms and all weapons handling techniques. The subject of film Health and Safety will of course be discussed and the session will finish with the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. There will also be clips and a showcase of Stunt equipment, weapon props and effects.
Meet the Filmmakers – Café Space – starts 11am Saturday, Filmbase Café Space
Filmbase has invited a number of Irish filmmakers to take part in our Café sessions throughout the day. Starting at 11am we will host a session on filmmaking on the hour with the last one at 3pm. These informal chats are open to anyone with an interest in film and particularly for those starting out as we’ll be talking with a number of filmmakers on how they got their break in filmmaking. Confirmed in the line-up already are directors Ken Wardrop (His & Hers) and Maya Derrington (Pyjama Girls), director and DoP PJ Dillon (Rewind, An Ranger) and producer Katie Holly (One Hundred Mornings, Sensation). More names will be announced in the coming days. So, drop by on the day and grab a cuppa in the café and learn all about how you can ‘Get into Film’!
Irish Shorts – starts 11am Saturday, Gallery Space
Filmbase will be screening a selection of Irish short films suitable for all ages throughout the day on Saturday 25th of June. With comedy, drama, animation and documentary all on the line-up there’s lots to keep you interested! Films will be screening in the ground floor gallery space and Budda Bag have kindly sponsored our screening space so there will be comfy Budda Bags to sink in to as you enjoy the best of Irish filmmaking talent!
DSLR Tips & Tricks – 12 noon Saturday, Training Room 3
One of the latest trends in filmmaking has seen huge demand in the use of the DSLR for filmmaking. Used in everything from commercials and short films to music videos and even big budget US TV shows, the Canon DSLR has revolutionised the way filmmakers approach shooting on a budget. Filmmaker Aidan Maguire (Needle Exchange) will be on hand to talk you through some tips and tricks to bear in mind when using the Canon EOS 5d. Our own Richie O’Keeffe from the Equipment Department will also be on hand to give advice on the equipment and filmmaking facilities available here at Filmbase.
Meet the Training Department – 12 noon Saturday, Multimedia Training Room
Filmbase offers a wide range of film production, post-production and multimedia courses suitable for beginners right through to the advanced. To keep with the theme of ‘Get into Film’ Grainne, Paul and Simon from the training department will be on hand on Saturday 25th to talk to you about how to get started in filmmaking and to fill you in on the services Filmbase provides.
Film Ireland Reviewing Workshop – 12 noon Saturday, Ground Floor
Niamh Creely, editor of Film Ireland will lead a one hour session on film reviewing. During the hour Niamh will go through the ins and outs of reviewing films, what makes a good review and what to avoid.
Animation Demo with Adobe Flash – 1.30pm Saturday, Multimedia Training Room
Cliff Parrot will run through the ins and outs of animating with Adobe Flash. The class will run for approximately an hour and will be geared at those with an interest in animation. Cliff will screen a number of examples of what can be achieved using the programme and will give advice and tips on how to use the programme to create a variety of animations.
Finally, it’s not a birthday without a birthday party so make sure you’re around for the Filmbase one on Saturday from 6 to 8pm.
Jameson will be on hand for our drinks reception and celebration. And we’d like to welcome all our friends, supporters and members both old and new for what’s sure to be a fantastic night!
