Have you met the Culturefox yet?

I was told about the Culturefox website and apps last Thursday at the Theatre Forum Conference – I hadn’t seen or heard about it before and thought it worth sharing.

According to the website:

Culturefox is the online guide to Irish cultural events allowing you to disseminate and capture information about Irish cultural events both here and abroad reaching thousands of daily users.

The searchable guide is freely available across all platforms on your mobile phone and as an app for iPhoneAndroid and BlackBerry.

In other words it is an events listing website for all of Ireland.

Of particular interest to me are the partners – the Arts Council of Ireland, Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

I’ve been using the Android app for the past few days and while it’s decent, there’s a problem with content curation – many events straddle different categories, some events have multiple dates and the formatting could be improved. The website too has issues – a sample date test for August brings up events in June, for example.

With some work – mainly stricter editorial control and content management – that could be made much better, but like any website, these things take a lot more resource than you’d think! Screenshots above from Origin.ie

In researching this post, I read in the Irish Times that the project cost €82,000.

Overall, it’s definitely better to have something like this out there than to have nothing. If nothing else, you’ll know where to go* when you want to find out what’s on!

(*Apart from here, of course. And here. And here. And here. And here. Etc.)
