Win tickets to see Molly Sweeney by Brian Friel at the Gate Theatre
Win tickets to one of this year’s most anticipated plays at the Gate Theatre.
It seems as expectant as The Gate is for the upcoming production of Brian Friel’s Molly Sweeney, first performed at this theatre in August 1994.
Molly Sweeney is a humorous, compelling and moving drama, which tells the story of a woman, blind since infancy, who has the chance to regain her sight.
Molly Sweeney’s journey is one of the most remarkable a Brian Friel character has ever made.
Tony Award nominee Dawn Bradfield will play Molly Sweeney (The Clinic, RTE). Peter Hanly (Braveheart) returns to the Gate as Frank Sweeney, her husband and Michael Byrne (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) will play the ophthalmologist.
The story is told by three characters – Molly herself, her husband Frank and her surgeon, Mr Rice. It premiered, Wikipedia tells me, Off Broadway in 1996 where it won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play of the 1996 season. Critics have said:
‘Impeccable…go see: and then go read and see again’
The Irish Times
‘Molly Sweeney is a meticulously crafted, beautifully written parable for our times…a deeply moving and heart-rending piece of theatre’
‘A dramatic poem of accumulative power and irresistible poignancy…quite magical’
