Riverdance is back in the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin and I have tickets to give away to it.

This prize is for the 5.30pm showing on Friday 13 July.

I’m surprised how many people haven’t seen Riverdance yet. Tis 18 years since the music was first heard in the Point and now it’s back in the Gaiety for its ninth season.

I’m slightly biased, not only having listened to the soundtrack for years now but sharing an office with the Riverdance team, but it’s an interesting show. I shared my thoughts on last year’s one here and while it wasn’t exactly what I expected, it’s still a good show that their audience will enjoy.

Here are details via the Gaiety Theatre website:

Riverdance is back! Now in its ninth summer season at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre, the internationally-acclaimed and award winning celebration of Irish music, song and dance that has thrilled millions around the world returns to Dublin and you can win tickets to be there.

Charting a story of Ireland and incorporating the best in irish dance, movement and, of course, Bill Whelan’s stirring soundtrack played by brilliant musicians, this is one sure to please anyone who would love an Irish night out.

To be in with a chance of winning two tickets to the evening performance on Friday 13 at 5.30pm just leave a comment below I’ll pick a winner at random on Tuesday, July 10. I have 2 sets to give away.

Riverdance ticket prices start from €20 and can be booked online here.

Groups of 10 and more can get big discounts and even (depending on the group size) a meet and greet with the cast! For more information on that, visit http://www.riverdance.com/ireland/groups

You’ll find Riverdance on Facebook at www.facebook.com/riverdance and on twitter @riverdance. Big thanks to them for offering the competition prizes.

Isn’t the Science Gallery great? They’ve just announced their Science of Discworld event, with Sir Terry Pratchett, Jack Cohen and Ian Stewart. I’ve got tickets to give away.

Discworld consists of a large disc resting on the backs of four giant elephants which are in turn standing on the back of an enormous turtle… named Great A’Tuin.

How could that not inspire a book on science?

To celebrate the lesser known festival Ankh-Morpork* City of Science 2012, Science Gallery will host a very special event with the author of the iconic Discworld series, Terry Pratchett.

Thursday, June 28, 2012 - 13:00 - 14:00

Joining him will be the co-authors of The Science of Discworld series, Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen.

The Science of Discworld series spans three books so far, each incorporating fictional stories from Pratchett’s Discworld universe – which has a very different set of natural rules than our own – with serious scientific discussion.

Join us for a rare opportunity to discuss the origins of the universe and the beginnings of life (as well as its inevitable evolution) – all from a Discworld perspective – with the creator of Discworld and the scientists who brought it closer it to our reality.

There will be a panel discussion with the authors, followed by a Q&A session where you will get to ask them about the physics of Unseen University, the evolution of The Librarian, and how this satirical fantasy universe has inspired three books on science.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Sir Terry Pratchett, OBE is a novelist, best known for the long-running Discworld series of comic fantasy novels. His latest Discworld book, Snuff is the third-fastest-selling novel since records began in the United Kingdom selling 55,000 copies in the first three days. He is also an adjunct Professor in the School of English at Trinity College Dublin

Ian Stewart is a professor of mathematics at the University of Warwick, England, and a writer of popular-science and science-fiction.

Jack Cohen is a reproductive biologist and also an author of popular-science and science-fiction books.

Award winning The Parting Glass, a play about family, football, friendship and returning to Ireland is one of the best one man Irish plays I’ve ever seen.

I have tickets to be won for Saturday night’s show at the Dalkey Book Festival.

Here’s a little more about the play:

Where were you on November 18, 2009, when our World Cup dreams were dashed?

Eoin was at the heart of the drama in Stade de France.

THE PARTING GLASS is set on the infamous night when Thierry Henry caused Ireland’s exit from this year’s World Cup.

After emigrating to Germany to find work during the 80s, Eoin made a new life for himself with the help of his wife Frieda and son Dieter. Now he returns to an Ireland that has boomed and bust.

Where Dorset Street has become so posh that all the women have turned blonde and the girls buying John Player Blue at Hardwick Street flats have a different pair of pyjamas to wear to the shops every day.

Henry’s sleight of hand is used by Bolger as a metaphor for the speedy deception experienced by people in Ireland in these post boom years. After emigrating to Germany to find work during the 80’s, Eoin made a new life for himself with the help of his wife Frieda and son Dieter.

He returned to Ireland at the height of the boom, and just in time for the bust. “Where Dorset Street has become so posh that all the women have turned blonde … and the girls buying John Player Blue at Hardwick Street flats have a different pair of pyjamas to wear to the shops every day”.

I really liked the play when I saw it for the first time in May of this year. Dermot Bolger‘s writing is incisive, honest and brutal, the analogies drawn interesting and topical and there are some very very funny lines in there. Ray Yeates plays the role convincingly, with considerable ease, humour and a comfort in the role often absent from such plays.

It’s a very Irish play and a play very much of its time. It made me laugh, it made me angry and it made me think about family, friendship and what being Irish means, no matter where you are in the world.

When I left the venue I immediately texted friends to tell them “You *have* to see this play”. They wouldn’t go to nearly as much theatre as me, but it’s ideal for anyone into their football, into comedy and with thoughts about Ireland as it is now.

The play is 90 minutes long and is on Saturday June 16 from 7 to 8.30pm in The Vico, Castle Street. Tickets are €10 each. Book them online here.

To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets, just leave a comment below and I’ll pick the winners and contact them tomorrow.

Thanks to Niamh in Axis Ballymun for the competition offer.
